Northern Regime's Neutral AI.
Recently we have started working on a new dynamic artificial intelligence system for Northern Regime, still needing a ton of work, hopefully the concept will be interesting enough to read on.
How It Works
The system will incorporate reputation and calculate how dangerous the player actually is. There will be quite a few camps in Northern Regime across the landscape. These camps will include completely neutral soldiers, completely friendly soldiers, traders, travelers, and a few more. The hostile enemies will of course attack on sight with no questions asked. Neutral soldiers will not attack if you are unarmed, when switching to a weapon they will attack, this will decrease your reputation so when you do stumble on a neutral camp they will attack and become hostile. Friendly soldiers will not attack even when drawing a weapon, based on loyalty, but doing this will decrease your reputation much more than drawing on a neutral camp. Hostile camps won't always be hostile, if your reputation is very good they may, or may not give you a chance to prove yourself. They may ask you to do a task or give them a resource they are desperate for. This will increase your reputation with them, they then will be happy not to fire on sight. If your reputation is bad and you come across a traveler they will act friendly as they most likely are scared from what they have heard about you. The niche is, if you turn your back on them or holster your weapon they are likely to take the chance and attack you. This will hopefully add a new dynamic to Northern Regime and increase the experience for the consumer. Northern Regime is a single player game, but we really don't want it to feel that way. We want our world to feel alive with lots of surprises and decisions the player can make.
